What do the abbreviations for trim levels of car models stand for? (GT, LS, LT. . . etc)? - ls models archive

For example, I have a Mercury Grand Marquis LS. What does the "LS" actually represented. I know that's when you buy a Chevrolet, "LT" a greater level of adjustment than others. I know muscle cars with "GT" of the equipment with the largest engine and performance parts in general higher than the degree.

So, does anyone know what these abbreviations actually trim level?
